UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay Abuses Basic Human Rights of the Maldivians and Muslims

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay visited Maldives from 22-24 November, 2011. This was the first-ever visit by a UN High Commissioner for Human Rights to the Maldives. During her visit she gave a keynote address to the Maldives parliament, the People’s Majlis, on 24 November. She also held a press conference at the UN building in the Maldives capital Male’ on Thursday 24 November 2011 at 17:45. The website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives reveals that her sudden visit was at the invitation of the government of the Maldives. Many Maldivians raise eyebrows on this very fact that this sudden visit by her to hurl abuse on Maldivians coincided with the public outrage on idolatrous SAARC monuments in Addu, Maldives.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay: Abusing basic human rights of Maldivians in a speech she delivered to Maldives parliamentarians.

It was in her speech to the parliament and during the press conference, that she fell from grace and abused the most basic human rights of the Maldivians with her antireligious remarks as well as her abuse of Maldivians as a whole. How ironic it is, that the very person who is tasked with protecting human rights of all UN member nations committed this heinous crime.

Her mission was clear: to challenge The Islamic Sharia and the constitution of the Maldives and therefore, abuse human rights of the Maldivians by attacking both their religion and their constitution.

During her speech in the parliament on 24 Novermber, 2011, she said that flogging women convicted of extra-marital sex is one of the most inhumane forms of violence against women. “This practice constitutes one of the most inhumane and degrading forms of violence against women and should have no place in the legal framework of a democratic country. I strongly believe that a public debate is needed in Maldives on this issue of major concern,” Navi Pillay said in her address to the MPs. However the truth of the matter is that flogging is carried out for both men and women equality; 100 lashes each if convicted. So she clearly missed the point. It’s simply not true to say it is discriminatory against women when both men and women receive the same sentence. MPs from from the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), Dhivehi Qaumee Party (DQP), Jumhooree Party leader Gasim Ibrahim and at least one MP of ruling Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) boycotted the meeting, knowing that Millay is such an anti-Islamic figure who regularly insults Islam and Muslims alike.

And again the same day, she repeated her abuses speaking to journalists at the United Nations Building in Male before concluding her four-day visit to the island nation. She called on Maldivian authorities to remove the constitutional provision that requires every citizen to be a Muslim. She said the provision is discriminatory and does not comply with the international standards. “I would again urge a debate on that to open up the benefits of the constitution to all and to remove that discriminatory provision,” she said. Asked why she made her remarks about flogging when it violates the Maldivian constitution, Pillay said that “I don’t believe you have a constitution”.

However, her remarks about remove the constitutional provision that requires every citizen to be a Muslim, is out of context. It is worth noting that the Maldives is a 100% Muslim country and therefore this particular call by her is rather irrelevant to the Maldives context; it may be relevant to those countries where there are different religious groups. In addition to that, it is also worth noting that no single Maldivian have been deported from the country due to religious beliefs. So, why she abused Maldivians like that? Sheer ignorance?

Her remarks that she does not believe there is a constitution in the Maldives raises serious concerns. Maldives is the a model democracy among Muslim nations and it’s constitutions is part of this promising democracy. Therefore, saying there is not constitution in the Maldives indicates her disrespect to the democratic process in the Maldives.

These remarks by her about the most basic human rights of Maldivians; their religion and their constitution can be regarded as abusing these rights of Maldivians. For these reasons, a vast majority of Maldivian are voicing their concerns against these remarks by her through protests and through social media such as facebook and also by the comments they leave on local news papers such as Haveeru daily.

Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Baree denouncing Pillay’s remarks

Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr. Abdul Majeed Abdul Bary strongly denounced Pillay’s remarks and said that flogging is one of the important rulings of Islam and there is no room for a public debate on this issue. A ruling party MP Abdulla Abdul Raheem who boycotted her speech later in a parliamentary session said that such a person as Pillay who do not accept the constitution of a democratic country, should not be in such a high post of United Nations. He also said that her speech at the parliament should be deleted from the minutes of the parliament because it is such a disgrace that she caused there. Many, including MP Abdulla Abdul Raheem and the independent MP Mohamed Nasheed criticized the speaker of the parliament for allowing her to speak in the parliament.

Ruling party MP Abdulla Abdul Raheem called for the resignation of Pillay from UN job for not accepting the constitution of Maldives

One comment left on Haveeru daily said “she needs to learn how to respect others religion…. Maldives is a peaceful country where all are Muslims. For the ambassador it is better to learn how to avoid conflicts in communities rather than making conflicting statements and run away.” Another comment, also on Haveeru, said if she doesn’t know how to respect others’ religion, she is not fit to be a human rights ambassador. Just let us be in our religion, Islam doesn’t need any modification from anyone!” Another comment for another news article of her said “Madam, it’s not only in Islam, the extra-marital sex is forbidden…there are other religions as well…just that in Islam there is a punishment for a sin, does not mean, it has to be changed for the sake of your ‘Human Rights’. If you are so ‘Human Right concerned’ you may think of getting involved in Palestine-Israel issues and you may find a lifetime works there’.

Independent MP Mohamed Nasheed criticised the speaker of the Maldives parliament for allowing Pillay to speak in the parliament

The comments left on Haveeru touches important issues. One such comment said “UN Charter dictates that all respect others religion, culture and sovereignty. In her capacity as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay has violated our rights and interfered with our internal affairs. I would like to ask her if an occasional flogging is worse than gang rapping and broad daylight murders that are occurring on a daily basis in the countries that has multi religions? Is she blind to what is happening in Israel occupied Palestinian land?”

In addition to that, the outrage of caused by Pillay came on streets in the form public protests in the capital Male’ on the next day. My All Time favourite International Songs (11): “Afreen Afreen” by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (Pakistan)

Afreen Afreen is one of the many beautiful songs by the legendary Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.  But this song has something unique about it. This song comes with as an original video song and the video posted here of the song Afreen Afreen is the original official video of this song.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was not an ordinary singer. In fact, According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan holds the world record for the largest recorded output by a Qawwali artist—a total of 125 albums as of 2001.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was born on October 13, 1948 in the city of Lyallpur (now Faisalabad), Pakistan. He was the fifth child and first son of Fateh Ali Khan, a musicologist, vocalist, instrumentalist, and Qawwal. He is considered one of the greatest singers ever recorded, he possessed a six-octave vocal rangeand could perform at a high level of intensity for several hours.Extending the 600-year old Qawwalitradition of his family, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan is widely credited with introducing Sufi musicto international audiences. He was popularly known as Shahenshah-e-Qawwali, meaning The King of Kings of Qawwali.

In 1971, after the death of Mubarak Ali Khan, Nusrat became the official leader of the family Qawwali party and the party became known as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Mujahid Mubarak Ali Khan & Party. Khan’s first public performance as the leader of the Qawwali party was at a studio recording broadcast as part of an annual music festival organised by Radio Pakistan, known as Jashn-e-Baharan. Khan sang mainly in Urduand Punjabi and occasionally in Persian, Brajbhasha and Hindi. His first major hit in Pakistan was the song Haq Ali Ali, which was performed in a traditional style and with traditional instrumentation. The song featured restrained use of Nusrat’s sargam improvisations.

In 1979, Khan married his first cousin, Naheed (the daughter of Fateh Ali Khan’s brother, Salamat Ali Khan); they had one daughter, Nida.

Khan contributed songs to, and performed in, several Pakistani films. Shortly before his death, he recorded a song each for two Bollywood films, Aur Pyaar Ho gaya (in which he also sang the song Koi jane Koi Na Jane onscreen) and Kachche Dhaage. He sang the title song of the film, Dhadkan. He also sang Saya bhi saath jab chhod jaye for Sunny Deol’s movie, Dillagi. The song was released only in 1999, two years after Nusrat’s death.

Khan was taken ill with kidney and liver failure on August 11, 1997 in London, Englandwhile on the way to Los Angelesin order to receive a kidney transplant. He died of a sudden cardiac arrestat Cromwell Hospital, London, on Saturday, August 16, 1997, aged 48.His body was returned to faisalabad, Pakistan and his funeral was attended by the public.

My All Time Favourite International Songs (10): “Desert Rose” by Sting & Cheb Mami (English/Arabic)

Desert Rose is very beautiful song for me. I just can’t stop listening to this song. The song is unique, because it is English and Arabic mix.

Desert Rose is a single by Sting from his album Brand New Day (1999). The song peaked at #3 in Switzerland, #4 Italy, #15 in the UK Sinles Chart and #17 in the US Billboard Hot 100.

The song is noted for Sting’s duet performance with Algerian rai singer Cheb Mami, creating a distinct world music feel to the song. It also has a popular music video featuring Sting taking a trip through the Mojave Desert in a Jaguar S-Type and then going to a nightclub in las Vegas, Nevada to perform the song with Cheb Mami.

The lyrics of the song are inspired by the Frank Herbert novel, Dune, of which Sting is a fan. Sting also played the villainous Feyd Rautha in the 1984 film adaptation. Both the book and the song feature the Arabic language, as well as imagery involving moisture and desert plantlife.

The Legacy of Muammar Al-Gaddafi

The late Libyan leader Muammar Al-Gadhafi’s 42 years legeacy can be outlined coulorfully. Some have depicted him as a brutal dictator, especially by western media outlets. Because he -in recent times – criticised leaders of oil rich gulf countries, the media in those countries as well some media outlets of other countries that managed to oust their leaders, keep describing col Gadhafi in the worst imaginable ways. But if you really look at who he managed to oust in 1969 without any bloodshed (unlike NTC who ousted him) and the contrasting situations before and after he came power, then you would start to have – at least – some positive thoughts about him.

Media is a strong tool that can influence peoples’ minds. Easily when one-sided in covering a situation, the positives – often – are ignored. The same thing happened with the coverage of Libya and gadhafi. Rarely we hear world media talking about the achievements Col gadhafi and the accusations leveleld against him often don’t add up.

Second, lets look at his rise to the leader of Libya. In his youth, Muammar Gaddafi was an admirer of Arab nationalist leader Gamal Abdel Nasser. He first hatched plans to topple Libya’s monarchy as a young soldier. A charismatic figure, he received army training in the UK before returning to Libya to overthrow King Idris in a bloodless coup on 1 September 1969.

Gaddafi was a huge admirer of Egypt’s Gamal Abdel Nasser, who led the Egyptian Revolution of 1952

He developed his political philosophy known as the Green Book and took on foreign oil interests in Libya. He also played a key role in the Middle East oil crisis of 1973-74 and fostered links with fellow African and other regional leaders. His attempts to represent pan-African interests were not ultimately successful.

Col Gaddafi’s courting of militant groups, including the Irish Republican Army and the Palestine Liberation Organisation earned him the “mad dog” label from US President Ronald Reagan. The US responded to Libya’s alleged involvement in a terror attack in Europe with air strikes on Tripoli and Benghazi. Col Gaddafi’s adopted daughter Hana was killed in the as a result of bombing along with 100 Libyans.

A monument of 1986 mombing by USA

The bombing of Pan-Am flight 103 over the Scottish town of Lockerbie was the next significant escalation in tensions. Libya was blamed for causing the deaths of 270 people in the air and on the ground, the worst single act of terrorism ever witnessed in the UK. Col Gaddafi’s initial refusal to hand over the two Libyan suspects to be tried resulted in a protracted period of negotiations and UN sanctions.

In 1999, two Libyans were handed over and tried in a Scottish court for the Lockerbie bombing, one was found guilty. The resolution of the case, along with Col Gaddafi’s subsequent admission and renunciation of a covert nuclear and chemical weapons programme, paved the way for a significant warming of relations between Tripoli and Western powers. With international sanctions lifted, Tripoli was back on the international political itinerary, allowing British Prime Minister Tony Blair, among other leading figures, to drop in at Col Gaddafi’s famously luxurious Bedouin tent erected in his palace grounds. Mr Blair visited in 2004 and again in 2007.

Inspired by events in neighbouring Tunisia and Egypt and sparked by the arrest of a Libyan human rights campaigner, protests against Col Gaddafi’s four-decade rule began in February. Starting in the east, where he staged his coup more than 40 years earlier, they spread across the country. Col Gaddafi remained uncompromising and vowed to crush the rebellion. However, this was more than peaceful civilians protesting (despite NATO claims that their air campaign was to protect civilians). It was an aramed rebelion supported by NATO and Western countries along with some Gulf countries like Qatar and UAE. NATO gave full air backing for Libyan rebels. That was – perhaps – the reason the rebels succeeded in austing Col gadhafi from power. He was brutally killed bu rebel forces who captured hin on 20 October 2011 in Sirt, Libya, his home town and birthplace.

Those were some of the events the world noticed of him. However, when we look at his achievements and policies, the picture is much more colourful indeed.

1. There is no electricity bill in Libya; electricity is free for all its citizens.

2. There is no interest on loans, banks in Libya are state-owned and loans given to all its citizens at 0% interest by law.

3. Home considered a human right in Libya – Gaddafi vowed that his parents would not get a house until everyone in Libya had a home. Gaddafi’s father has died while him, his wife and his mother are still living in a tent.

4. All newlyweds in Libya receive $60,000 Dinar (US$ 50,000 ) by the government to buy their first apartment so to help start up the family.

5. Education and medical treatments are free in Libya. Before Gaddafi only 25% of Libyans are literate. Today the figure is 83%.

6. Should Libyans want to take up farming career, they would receive farming land, a farming house, equipments, seeds and livestock to kick- start their farms – all for free.

7. If Libyans cannot find the education or medical facilities they need in Libya, the government funds them to go abroad for it – not only free but they get US $2, 300/mth accommodation and car allowance.

8. In Libyan, if a Libyan buys a car, the government subsidized 50% of the price.

9. The price of petrol in Libya is $0. 14 per liter.

10. Libya has no external debt and its reserves amount to $150 billion – now frozen globally.

11. If a Libyan is unable to get employment after graduation the state would pay the average salary of the profession as if he or she is employed until employment is found.

12. A portion of Libyan oil sale is, credited directly to the bank accounts of all Libyan citizens.

13. A mother who gave birth to a child receive US $5 ,000.

14. 40 loaves of bread in Libya costs $ 0.15.

15. 25% of Libyans have a university degree.

16. Gaddafi carried out the world’s largest irrigation project, known as the Great Man-Made River project, to make water readily available throughout the desert country.
